Sardinia Biomed Cluster

Sardegna Ricerche, the Regional Body for Research and Innovation, promoted the Sardinia Biomed Cluster.

The Cluster is based on the aggregation of a number of companies operating in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices, natural products and enabling technologies of biomedical interest. The Cluster consists of all Sardinian research facilities working in the biomedical field, including several departments connected with the two regional universities, university centres specialised in specific biomedical topics, CNR institutes and two international research centres: Porto Conte Ricerche and CRS4.

The driving force is innovation: over 80% of the companies are engaged in R&D. The catalytic role of the local institutional support system is also evident: 46% of Sardinian biomed companies are based at the two Polaris sites.

The goal of the cluster is to promote innovation in the biomedicine sector for a more competitive regional health system, through the design, development and testing of new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and a greater integration of existing resources and skills in the business, scientific and institutional sectors.

The activities of Porto Conte Ricerche are cover all four areas of the Sardinian Biomed Cluster:

- Genetics and Genomics

- Drug Development

- Diagnostics, Medical Devices and clinical information systems

- Natural Products
